Board Functions


The primary functions of the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery as set out in the Nurse Practice Act 2016 are as follow:

The Board shall:

  1. Register all persons engaging in, or desiring to engage in the practice of nursing and midwifery;

  2. Establish the procedures and set guidelines for the licensure of all persons engaging in or desiring to engage in the practice of nursing and midwifery;

  3. Issue licenses to persons engaging in, or desiring to engage in the practice of nursing and midwifery within the Republic of Liberia who have graduated from an accredited school of nursing, midwifery and or advanced nursing or midwifery school;

  4. Create, maintain and update the records of all of its members including all categories of nurses and midwives;

  5. Establish procedures and requirements for the registration of nurses' aides and traditional birth attendants;

  6. Set procedures, guidelines and standards for the establishment and accreditation of nursing and midwifery training institutions in the Republic of Liberia;

  7. Accredit nursing and midwifery basic and post basic programs;

  8. Develop and harmonize the curricula of nursing and midwifery training institutions and ensure adherence to the curriculuma;

  9. Monitor nursing and midwifery schools for compliance in quality assurance;

  10. Monitor and evaluate nursing and midwifery practice for compliance of technical practice;

  11. Mentor new graduates in customer services and nursing and midwifery knowledge and skills;

  12. Accredit Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs for Nurses and Midwives
